The Friday & River crew had the privilege of spending a few amazing days in Austin, Texas with premier menswear market, The Pop Up Flea. We had a limited amount of free time, but we put together a short list of some of our favorite spots and must-sees if you are planning on visiting Austin. We were lucky enough to have a few local friends make recommendations, so we peppered in a few locals-only as well as some great well known spots.
The Salt Lick BBQ, Driftwood Texas - An iconic spot for amazing barbecue, and an even better experience. The pit alone is worth the visit. Be sure to ask for the burnt ends and the peach cobbler.
P.Terry's Burger Stand - A favorite of Austin locals, solid burgers, fries and amazing shakes. Think of P. Terry's as the local alternative for In-N-Out for Austin - no frills but great service and food.
The White Horse - A true taste of old Austin, and a locals-only haunt, the White Horse has remained untouched by the new development in Austin. Great local beers and live music.
Seventh Flag Coffee Co. - The crew from Seventh Flag served amazing nitro cold brew coffee during Pop Up Flea. The quality of the coffee is only matched by the good vibes of the people that work there.
The Green Belt - A beautiful and massive strip of nature bordering downtown. It's known for all kinds of outdoor activities including hiking, swimming and rock climbing.
Congress Avenue "Bat" Bridge - Every night during late spring and summer, locals and visitors gather at the Congress Ave. bridge to watch thousands of bats fly out at sundown.
Weathered Coalition - Dedicated to responsibly produced US-made menswear products, Weathered Coalition carries an amazing selection of denim, boots, accessories and apothecary items. It's not just a store - it's an experience, often hosting events and community gatherings. The founders Ben and Tyler are two of the nicest guys you'll ever meet and that energy shows in every detail of the store. We are excited to work with them as F&R's first retail partner in Austin. Uncommon Objects - A great vintage / antique store on South Congress. A fun stop for unique home decor items.
Hotel San Jose - Iconic hotel on S. Congress Street. Great stop for an evening cocktail.
Home Slice Pizza - Great slices for a quick bite on S. Congress.
Mighty Cone - Amazing food truck. Try the Chicken with Avocado for the full experience.
Hopdoddy Burgers - We didn't try the burgers, but we got an Oreo shake on a recommendation from a friend. Quite possibly the best shake in Austin.
Austin Beerworks - A local favorite. Very good craft beer you can find just about anywhere.
Magnolia Market, Waco Texas - We are big fans of Chip and Joanna Gaines' show "Fixer Upper", so we had to take the road trip to Waco to visit their market. It's an incredible compound complete with their store, food trucks, playground, and an open-air venue for music.
